The art and interpretation pieces tell the fascinating story of a historically rich place that has been used in many modes: from its origins as a freshwater source and clay deposit, to its role as the location of Sydney’s first pottery works; its transformation into the main street of Chinatown; its period as a warehouse and industrial precinct; and its contemporary identity as part of one of Sydney’s most vibrant hospitality districts.
Inspired by the original ecology, geology, and longstanding cultural and community associations, the new artworks contribute a playful and distinctive character to the hotel and distinguish it as a cultural landmark to the surrounding neighbourhood.
The project created opportunities for locally practising Sydney-based artists and designers to collaborate with local initiatives, organisations, institutions and craftspeople throughout the development, production and installation of the works.
