The new urban pocket park is proposed as a place of respite in the middle of one of the most congested and built-up parts of the city. Terraced and landscaped with generous public seating, this new inner-city plaza is activated by hospitality and retail—with a café, restaurant and bar spilling out into the space. The public domain is extended into and through the site, knitting the ground plane into the dense urban fabric.
Balancing at the edge, the tower frames the sky, looming over the pocket park below. Its form symbiotically twists away from the communal spaces, allowing for the soft landscape to breathe and the trees to thrive. Contrasting dark and light, the two forms exist in a state of equilibrium, both dynamic and at rest.
From Hawkesbury Sandstone Slopes to the terraced landscape of tall Angophora Costata trees that frame the entry to the cutting, we have drawn on the characteristics of the pre-colonial Sydney landscape, inviting the public to experience a welcome, yet unanticipated civic intervention.
