‘Tree Family’, designed by Aileen Sage with garigarra, mori, and Kazu Noguchi Quill, is being exhibited as part of ‘Plant Life’ at the National Gallery of Victoria at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia Fed Square, 28 Aug 2026 – 7 Feb 2027.

‘Tree Family’ is the result of a collective process: an opportunity to learn and share stories about our long-standing relationships with trees. A family of tables and stools made using a combination of salvaged local timbers, each piece can be used individually, as a desk, seat or table, or combined to create settings for larger gatherings.

‘Tree Family’ was also a finalist in the Australian Furniture Design Award (AFDA) 2026, founded by Stylecraft and presented in collaboration with the National Gallery of Victoria.

The theme for this year’s AFDA Award was ‘Living Well Living Small’. Tree Family embodied an idea not only of living well in physically small spaces, but also living in a more considered way with a smaller environmental footprint - using salvaged materials that had already been taken from the natural environment, repurposing them, and giving back through a program of collaboration with local Indigenous businesses focused on environmental repair, education and community capacity building.
